About The Author

I was born in Caracas, Venezuela, but have grown up in various countries and cities up and down the Americas and the Caribbean. Aside from being Venezuelan, I am also a Canadian and American citizen. While writing is my passion, I am a foot and ankle surgeon and currently practice medicine in Durham, North Carolina. Every place I have lived in is rich with local history and folklore which has influenced my writing as detailed below.

Boca de Uchire, Estado Anzoátegui - Venezuela

Venezuela

While I was born in Caracas, what I truly call home is a tiny beach town in the eastern state of Anzoátegui called Boca de Uchire. Because of my father's job as an expatriate for a Canadian institution, my family moved from country to country for most of my early life. The one constant for us has been this sleepy town, part of which is nestled in a narrow isthmus and flanked by the Caribbean ocean to the north and the Unare lagoon to the south. Featured prominently in The Onyx Compendium (the second book of the Back to the Universe trilogy), this locale is rich with folklore and local mythology, most notably the caverns Las Fauces del Diablo (The Devil's Jowls) and the legend of the vengeful ghost of La Sayona.

Machu Picchu, Provincia de Urubamba - Peru

Peru

Half Venezuelan on my mother's side and half Peruvian on my father's, Peru has also been a prominent location in my life. While I've never lived in Peru, I have traveled through this wonderous country many times. My father, born in Lima but raised in to Andean mining town La Oroya, left Peru when he was 16-years-old however has continued to visit with certain regularity, giving us the opportunity to visit many of its historic locations. The legendary Incan citadel, Machu Picchu, is also featured in The Onyx Compendium.

Buenos Aire - Argentina

Argentina

As part of his job as a Risk Manager for the CIBC (Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce), my father was transferred from Caracas, Venezuela to La Lucila, a suburb of Buenos Aires, Argentina. I was very young, about 3-years-old, but remember this beautiful city fondly. Our stay was short-lived however, as less than a year later my father was transferred once again.

Toronto - Canada

Canada

As such, my father was called back to the CIBC headquarters, in Toronto, Canada. By now I was school-aged and had my first experience with the English language. Like any immigrant will attest to, this period was very challenging for me. Unable to understand and communicate properly, I was made fun of because of my accent and, because of a lack of understanding, was even left behind by the school bus at the wrong stop. Thankfully, being so young, these growing pains became less and less frequent as I adapted quickly to my adopted culture.

Silver Cay, Nassau - Bahamas

Bahamas

From a Winter Wonderland, my father was then transferred to a Tropical Paradise. We spent five years in Nassau, Bahamas, and I credit this period of my life as one of the most influential in my future writing career. Brimming with history and tradition, the legends and mythos of the Bahamas are infused with an incredible lore that dates to pre-Columbian times. The creation story of the Bahamas (perhaps my all-time favorite) is retold at length in The Onyx Compendium. Also notable is the hidden island of Arawak Cay, created specifically for The Darkest Dread, and is inspired by Blue Lagoon Island, a few short miles from Nassau.

Mississauga, Ontario - Canada

Canada

From Winter Wonderland to Tropical Paradise and back to the Winter Wonderland, once again my father was called back to the CIBC headquarters in Toronto, Canada. This time we settled in the quiet suburb of Mississauga, where I finished primary school and completed my first year of high school. This time we spent five years in Mississauga, the proudest day of which was when we became Canadian citizens. Gaining a deeper perspective and appreciation for Canadian history and tradition, my writing has also been influenced by the lore of the Iroquois and Huron, featured in the third book of the Back to the Universe trilogy, The Serpent Goddess.

Stamford, Connecticut - United States

Stamford, CT

We immigrated to the United States with yet another transfer from the CIBC. This time my father was stationed in the Manhattan offices and we settled in Stamford, a small city right on the Tri-State line, in Connecticut. I came of age in Stamford and those colorful experiences are prominently displayed in the first book of the Back of the Universe trilogy, The Emerald Tome. My family would remain in Stamford for eight years, four of which I spent out of state for college.

West Lafayette, Indiana

West Lafayette, IN

I opted to attend Purdue University, located in West Lafayette and right in the heart of Indiana. It was a strange and wonderful time; filled with fascination and confusion but also a lot of introspection. Many life-affirming experiences during this time would eventually shape the person I would grow into as I entered adulthood. This is also where I began asking myself deeper, more existential questions about life, death and the afterlife. Majoring in Psychology and Philosophy, I credit my writing and character-building to this base of knowledge to build full, three-dimensional protagonists. Purdue University is also the setting where The Darkest Dread begins, setting the stage for an unforgettable encounter that goes beyond space and time.

Seville, Spain

Spain

While at Purdue, I had the opportunity to study abroad and chose Seville. This historic city becomes the backdrop of an important event in the The Serpent Goddess. Brimming with history, one of the elements featured in The Onyx Compendium is a retelling of Tirso De Molina's tragic comedy El Burlador De Sevilla (The Trickster of Seville). Inspired by Miguel de Cervantes, the retelling is speckled with elements of Cervantes' opus, Don Quixote. Seville, aside from inspiring some of the deeper and more complicated characters in my writing, is also the place where I met my future wife. Her home is in Badolatosa, a tiny town in the outskirts of Seville, and is featured in a parallel story told in The Onyx Compendium.

Miami, Florida

Miami, FL

After completing my undergraduate studies at Purdue, I moved to Miami for graduate school and eventually medical school. Having lived in Miami for 11 years, it has become, by far, the city I am most intimately familiar with and is the only location that appears in every one of my works in some form. What makes this metropolis so striking is the inherent diversity and how each culture adds to the richness and charm of the city. Of course, like any other place, Miami has a dark underbelly, some of which comes through in The Serpent Goddess. On a personal note, a lot happened in Miami: I got married, finished medical school and my kids were born while I was in residency.

Sarasota, Florida

Sarasota, FL

After completing my residency in foot and ankle surgery at Mercy Hospital in Miami, I took a job in Sarasota. As it tends to happen to most young doctors, the following years were the busiest of my career. Professionally, these years were instrumental to growing as a surgeon and the experience gained was invaluable. Unfortunately, this meant that other projects and passions (most notably writing) had to be put on hold. Still, the experiences of a doctor navigating the ever complicated medical system coupled with unusual and extraordinary medical cases have served to bolster my writing with true-to-life accounts and medical realism as exemplified in The Darkest Dread.

Durham, NC

Durham, NC

Eventually I was offered a position with a different practice, this time in Durham. I now call North Carolina home and, more experienced and established professionally, I can allow myself to settle into the pleasantries of private practice. Finally achieving the ideal work/life balance, I have continued to grow my practice but am now also free to pursue other passions such as raising my family, traveling and, after a self-imposed hiatus, a return to writing.
